Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of how the perception of institutional ageism and the individual experience of ageism are related to the levels of social participation and life satisfaction among older adults living in urban communities. Using the 2019 survey data collected by the Aged Society and Social Capital Research Center, we analyzed 500 older adults living in metropolitan cities. Analyses of structural equation modeling showed that participants who perceived higher levels of institutional-level ageism tended to have lower levels of life satisfaction and social participation, and individual experience of ageism did not have significant effects on life satisfaction and social participation. As a result of indirect effect test, social participation mediated the relationship between perception of institutional ageism and life satisfaction. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
